Boiled wool, felting or fulling. No matter what it’s called, it is the process of matting wool by subjecting it to moisture, heat and pressure to create a dense fabric. Felting has been known to man for thousands of years and has origins from around the world. This ancient process is transformed into modern handbags and hats that are created and designed entirely by the artist. They are hand knitted, then washed in hot water, air dried for several days and then lined with fabric. By combining sheep’s wool with silk, llama, alpaca, cotton and soy these handbags are a unique landscape of color and texture that make them truly wearable art. Sierra graduated from Michigan State University in 2000 with a bachelor’s degree of fine art, with a focus on graphic design and printmaking. She lives with her husband in a 78-year-old home in the Eastown neighborhood of Grand Rapids, Michigan.
