I prepare my canvasses in advance. Using acrylic gel medium I create a texture pattern over the whole surface. After it has dried, I use red, black or brown as an under painting. Then I will sketch the general idea using chalk or charcoal.
Using acrylic paints in several layers, I allow time in between to reflect on where the painting is going Often times, the painting has some major revisions as I proceed further. It is finished when it "feels" right.
