Wood
My lamps are all hand turned, one-of-a-kind pieces. The bases are crafted using traditional spindle-turning techniques. I use mostly species of wood from North Carolina, in which fungi have been allowed to grow, creating interesting and unpredictable filigreed patterns superimposed over the natural wood grain.
The thickness in the lamps range from 1/32 to 3/32 of an inch, depending on the translucent properties of the wood, and the desired final color of the glowing wood. This glow provides a spectrophotometric guide to attaining the final thickness.
